American RVer’s May episode features hosts Jim and Peggy Grich traveling to the Yuma Territorial Prison in Arizona. Curator Tina Clark leads a tour of one of the most famous prisons in the West.

Located along the confluence of the Gila and Colorado Rivers, this was the only place to cross the Colorado River in the 1800’s with the help of a rope ferry. The prison is located on a bluff from which there was no safe escape.

“We take a look at the cells and the museum and Clark tells us much of the history of the prison as well as details about its most famous prisoners,” said Peggy Grich. “On a side note, years after the prison was closed, it housed Yuma high school, who’s team name is still the Yuma Criminals.
