RV supplier Atwood Mobile Products is moving its corporate headquarters from Rockford, Ill., to Elkhart, Ind., bringing the company closer to its Northern Indiana client base and also consolidating with existing Atwood operations in Elkhart, according to the South Bend Tribune.
“It’s the center of the industry that we serve, so it makes sense to be close to our customer base,” said David Swanson, Atwood’s vice president of engineering.
The company had announced in November it would be transferring about 70 divisional office jobs and possibly 300 hourly manufacturing jobs to Elkhart.
The Tribune reported that Atwood’s parent company, DURA Automotive Systems Inc., based in Rochester Hills, Mich., mandated the relocation of Atwood’s corporate offices. Atwood is also closing its entire Rockford manufacturing operation and relocating to existing plants in Iowa and Tennessee that have open floor space.
The corporate offices will move to a 38,000-square-foot building on north Main Street in Elkhart which currently houses Atwood offices, the local sales force and manufacturing operations for aluminum extrusions and ladders.
Atwood, which has three additional locations in Elkhart making it the company’s largest manufacturing concentration, is a major supplier to the recreational vehicle sector of water heaters, furnaces, range products, hardware items, seating frames, couplers, fifth-wheel landing gears, entry doors, window products and vapor alarms.
The company currently employs about 1,250 people in Elkhart and also has a window plant in LaGrange that employs 350.
Atwood’s executives plan to move in by Aug. 16, and the remainder of the professional staff will arrive in October or November, according to Swanson. In all, about 40 more employees will be making the move to Elkhart and 10 will be hired to replace those who will not be moving.
