Snap! Outfitters in York Haven, Pa., started building an aluminum pop-up, pickup truck cap camper because the company’s president, Richard Dennis, was an avid kayaker and couldn’t find one to fit his full-sized pickup truck.
As reported by the York Daily Record, the camper was on display during the three-day York RV Show at the York Expo Center this weekend.
Dennis, president of Snap! Outfitters and Die-Tech Inc., was looking for a camper solution for his full-sized pickup truck for kayaking trips. Dennis camps and kayaks about 20-30 times a year, he said.
“I tried to get one built and they told me to go away,” Dennis said, referring to his new competitors, who told him he could only buy one for a Toyota Tacoma, a mid-size pickup truck. Dennis saw a niche market that hadn’t been tapped.
The design is simple, with an oversized open area in the bed of the truck with four locking aluminum flaps on the sides. A full/double bed area extends slightly and pops up over the truck cab. The bed can hold 500 pounds. The bed platform folds up into the pop-up opening up into the full cavity of the pop-up when parked. There is a ladder to get into the bed.
