Industry veteran Bill Pifer, 79, recently passed away, succumbing to cancer on Memorial Day.
As vice president of marketing for the Vesely Co. in La Peer, Mich., Pifer was instrumental in making the Apache camping trailer a name nationally known through a network of dealers from Long Island, N.Y., to Long Beach, Calif.
Pifer served Vesely from the mid-1960s until 1969 when he opened his own dealership in Flint, Mich. He later moved it to Warren where he remained in business until his retirement in 1989.
An avid outdoorsman, Pifer’s great loves were fishing, sailing and skiing. To accommodate those interests, he spent his summers fishing and sailing in Michigan and his winters skiing in Colorado.
Those who knew him understood he practiced a philosophy of “working hard when working and playing hard when playing.”
As per his request, his outdoor memorial service was held at ponds near Copper Mountain in Colorado that environmentalist Pifer used to clean every year. Attendees were invited to participate in continuing the annual clean-up.
Pifer leaves a wife, Gale, in Silverthorne, Colo., and two sons, Thomas and Darby, in Michigan.
