The midsize transit bus business is in a good zone right now, said Michael DeMarco, national sales manager for Ameritrans Bus of Elkhart, Ind.

The South Bend Tribune reported that the manufacturer and distributor of small to midsize buses announced plans Friday to expand its operations in Elkhart, creating up to 35 new jobs by 2017.

The Elkhart business, which was acquired by Faribault, Minn.-based ABC Companies in 2012, will invest $429,384 to renovate and equip its new 50,000-plus-square-foot plant at 3601 County Road 6 in Elkhart.

The facility, which will be operational by next month, according to a release from the Indiana Economic Development Corp., will enable the company to concentrate on the production of small transit-style buses.

Ameritrans, which employs 78 full-time workers, is currently hiring, DeMarco said. Interested applicants can apply by completing an application at the company’s headquarters at 2503 Ada Drive in Elkhart.

The market for Ameritrans is on an upswing.

“It’s hit a nice growth point,” DeMarco said. “Our buses are typically a five- to seven-year bus. We’ve come into that cycle where we’ve started to replace these five- and seven-year buses.”
