Champion Enterprises Inc., a leading manufactured home producer, believes manufactured home shipments will decline industrywide by 12% this year, when compared with 2001, to a total of 170,000 factory-built homes delivered to dealers.
If Champion’s forecast is accurate, then manufactured home shipments this year will be 54% below the industry’s most recent peak, which occurred in 1998, when 373,000 units were delivered to dealers.
Meanwhile, Champion believes retail sales of manufactured homes will outpace shipments by 25,000 units this year. Champion, which left the RV industry more than 10 years ago, forecasts 195,000 manufactured homes will be sold this year, down 8% from 2001.
Several RV manufacturers, including Fleetwood, Skyline and Kit, also build manufactured homes. Gulf Stream Coach’s sister company, Fairmont Homes, also builds manufactured homes.
Kit recently announced it plans to sell its RV division to that division’s sales manager.
