The wholesale market for Class A motorhomes expanded at a torrid 7.9% rate during October and travel trailer shipments also increased at a robust 5.7% rate during the month, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
A total of 4,100 Class A’s were shipped from factories to dealers during October, compared with 3,800 units delivered a year earlier.
Thanks in part to the strong October, Class A shipments were up 3% after the first 10 months of this year to 34,400 units, compared with 33,400 units shipped during the same portion of 2002.
Meanwhile, a total of 13,000 travel trailers were delivered in October, compared with 12,300 units shipped a year earlier. And after the first 10 months of this year, travel trailer shipments were up 12.2% to 128,300 units, compared with 114,300 units shipped a year earlier.
The fifth-wheeel segment also had a good month in October with deliveries increasing 3% to 6,800 units, compared with 6,600 units shipped a year earlier. After the first 10 months of this year, fifth-wheel shipments were up 1.4% to 57,300 units, compared with 56,500 units delivered during the same portion of last year.
Here is how the other product categories fared:
• Class C motorhome shipments soared 20% higher in October to 1,800 units, compared with 1,500 units shipped a year earlier. However, after the first 10 months of this year, Class C shipments still were down 0.6% to 15,700 units, compared with 15,800 units delivered during the same portion of 2002.
• Folding camper shipments declined 8.6% in October to 3,200 units, compared with 3,500 units shipped a year earlier. After the first 10 months of this year, folding camper deliveries were down 21.9% to 31,000 units, compared with 39,700 units shipped a year earlier.
• Truck camper shipments declined 11.1% in October to 800 units, compared with 900 units delivered a year earlier. After the first 10 months of this year, truck camper shipments were down 13.6% to 7,600 units, compared with 8,800 units delivered a year earlier.
• Class B motorhome shipments were level in October at 200 units, the same number delivered during October 2002. After the first 10 months of this year, Class B shipments were down 25% to 1,800 units, compared with 2,400 units shipped a year earlier.
