With the sudden, and to many, unanticipated increase in RV shipments this year, finding drivers to deliver motorhomes and towables from manufacturers to dealers has been a challenge.
This was brought to light again late last week with the abrupt closure of Morgan Drive Away.
But at least one delivery firm, Elkhart, Ind.-based Classic Transport Inc., has expanded recently to fill the need.
Classic Transport, founded by former Jayco and Starcraft executive Bill Garvey, recently opened a third location, in Goshen, Ind. In addition to Elkhart and Goshen, Classic Transport also has a facility in Nicholson, Ga.
“Classic began with 30 drivers when the company was founded in 1993 and today we employ 400 independent drivers,” said Garvey, the company’s president. “That’s one of the largest fleets in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.”
The opening of the Goshen facility comes on the heels of a major capital improvement program that replaced Classic’s computer network and telephone system, he said.
“We have a very active recruiting policy that allows us to hire and keep a responsible work force,” Garvey continued. “As a result, we reduce costs through lower accident rates and reduced cargo damage.
“Another hallmark of our business is customer satisfaction,” Garvey said. “I’m fortunate to have a team of committed managers, dispatchers and support staff who believe in the kind of service that keeps customers returning year after year, regardless of the size of their business.”
The decision by Garvey to expand his company to meet the RV transport sector’s challenges explains why he was recently named a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year award sponsored by accounting firm Ernst and Young.
