Coachmen Industries Inc. fired President and Chief Operating Officer Matthew J. Schafer Tuesday (Feb. 7) “for personal violations of company policies,” the company said in a statement.
The Elkhart, Ind.-based recreational vehicle and modular home manufacturer said the termination “did not involve any improprieties in the company’s financial statements, accounting practices or public filings.” On Jan. 30, Coachmen reported a net loss for its fourth quarter and year-end.
Schafer was hired as president and COO by Coachmen in 2003 after more than 19 years at General Electric Co., where he served in various executive positions.
The company said Schafer’s responsibilities had been focused since mid-2005 on the Housing and Building Group within Coachmen, while CEO Claire Skinner had assumed his duties for the RV Group.
In the interim following Schafer’s dismissal, Skinner will oversee the Housing and Building Group as well.
