Coachmen Industries Inc. has hired a former General Electric Co. executive to be its new president and COO, the Elkhart, Ind.-based company announced today (Nov. 18).
Matthew J. Schafer, a 19-year veteran at GE, will fill the vacancy that has existed at Coachmen since Keith Corson retired in July 2000. Claire Skinner, who added the title of president when her uncle retired a little more than three years ago, remains Coachmen’s chairman and CEO, and Schafer will report to her.
Most recently, Schafer was COO of GE’s Equipment Management, TIP and Modular Space businesses, which are involved in leasing and renting truck trailers and modular structures. The businesses Schafer operated for GE are big customers of Miller Building Systems, a Coachmen subsidiary, Skinner said.
“Matt (Schafer) has an outstanding track record of managing manufacturing and financial service businesses to achieve the highest levels of operational efficiency, and his expertise and understanding of manufacturing processes will benefit both segments of our business (RVs and modular homes/structures),” Skinner said.
Skinner added that because of Coachmen’s growth during the last three years, “It is now the right time to add a very experienced operating executive to our team to help the company realize our top- and bottom-line growth potential.”
