North American Composites Co. (NAC), a division of Interplastic Corp. of Minnesota, is establishing a Midwestern base in Mishawaka for its chemical distribution.

The South Bend Tribune reported that extensive renovations begin this week on a nearly 50,000-square-foot building the firm bought at 1460 E. 12th St., and officials expect the facility to be operational in October.

NAC is spending $600,000 to improve the building and $648,500 to upgrade equipment, much of it to meet fire suppression requirements for chemical storage, says Jerry Hemming, who will operate the facility.

The company provides materials such as resins, gel coats, adhesives, putties, fiberglass, core materials and filler materials for the fiberglass reinforced plastics market.

“We service and supply a lot of different industries,” Hemming says. “The primary industries are marine, RV, tub-shower, exterior body panels for trucks and mass transit, electrical components for the electrical industry, cultured marble.”
