Shipments of conversion vehicles declined 20% in December to end a year in which the wholesale demand for converted vans, pickups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) shrunk by 15.8%, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
Here is how the three product categories fared:
• Van conversion shipments declined 19.4% in December to 2,500 units, compared with 3,100 units delivered to auto dealers in December 2002. For all of 2003, van conversion shipments declined 17.6% to 38,800 units, compared with 47,100 in 2002.
• Pickup conversion shipments fell by 25% in December to 900 units, compared with 1,200 a year earlier. For all of 2003, deliveries of converted pickups declined 8.8% to 14,500 units, compared with 15,900 units in 2002.
• SUV conversion shipments totaled 200 units in December, the same number shipped in December 2002. For all of 2003, shipments of converted SUVs fell by 21.3% to 3,700 units, compared with 4,700 in 2002.
