Cruise America, Mesa, Ariz., recently opened a company-owned RV sales and rental site in Elkhart, Ind., as part of a long-range effort to expand its presence in the Northeast , according to Mike Marcine, director of rentals and sales.
The new Cruise America facility, which opened Oct. 1, is located near the primary Elkhart exit off of I-80/90 (the Indiana Toll Road). The site covers one acre and can inventory up to 25 Class C motorhomes, Marcine said.
Eventually, an indoor showroom will be opened on the property at 115 E. Windsor Dr., Building 16, he said.
In addition to 15 company-owned locations in the U.S., including Alaska, and Canada, Cruise America also rents through more than 150 independent dealer/agents.
Cruise America’s dealer/agent nearest Elkhart is Jack’s Trailer Sales in South Bend, Ind. The vast majority of Cruise America’s staff in Elkhart will refer local rental customers to Jack’s because the primary purpose for the Elkhart location is sales of units taken out of Cruise America’s rental fleet, Marcine said.
Conversely, Jack’s will not sell Cruise America rental fleet units.
Most of the Class C’s available for sale at Elkhart were built by Thor Industries Inc., although some were produced by Fleetwood Enterprises Inc.
But in all cases, they were refurbished at Cruise America’s shops in Arizona before being shipped to Northern Indiana.
“We get a lot of business over the Internet now,” Marcine said, the firm now can market from the Elkhart site to Rochester, N.Y., Cleveland and Ann Arbor, Mich.
“We’ve gotten customers who have driven all the way out to (Mesa, Ariz.) to pick up their coach.”
Consequently, the Elkhart location should help Cruise America’s used sales business because customers from the Northeast will not need to travel as far, he added.
