Germany’s DaimlerChrysler AG, parent of diesel pusher chassis supplier Freightliner, returned to profitability during the second quarter.
DaimlerChrysler reported a net profit, excluding one-time-only items, of 535 million euros, down 70% from 1.75 billion euros earned a year earlier.
One euro is equivalent to 87.5 cents in U.S. currency.
The company’s second quarter operating profit totaled 725 million euros, compared with an operating loss of 610 million euros during the first quarter of this year and 2.6 billion euros earned from operations during the second quarter of 2000.
Strong performance by DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes-Benz luxury car business and strong sales of its more modestly priced passenger cars in Europe helped return the company to profitability.
