The Dana Towing Group, manufacturer of Tekonsha Towing Systems, Bargman vehicle lighting products, Accupower electric brake controls and SurePull Towing Systems, recently dedicated its new 76,000-square-foot factory, headquarters office and distribution center in Tekonsha, Mich.

Dana Towing, a unit of Dana Corp., a global supplier to auto industry OEMs, started production in the new plant in late March and division executives moved into their new offices in May, said Mark Gage, director of marketing.

The new facility replaces the original Tekonsha Engineering plant which had only 14,000 square feet of space and was in a location were expansion was not possible, Gage said.

The move into the new facility improves the efficiency of the Dana Towing Group’s engineering because more activity can now take place under one roof.

The new, larger facility also allows Dana Towing to develop “microprocessor-driven” products for the towing market.

Additionally, the four product lines will be distributed out of the facility in Tekonsha – located in south central Michigan – and the sales personnel for the four product lines were “merged into one selling team” in the new facility, Gage said.

Independent distributors of RV aftermarket parts and components are a big part of the customer base of Dana Towing, Gage added.

About 75% of the Dana Towing Group’s business is RV-related, Gage said.

Tekonsha Engineering was acquired by Dana from Echlin Inc., another auto industry supplier, in 1998, and it was re-named Dana Towing. Earlier, Tekonsha Engineering created Accupower in 1992 and it acquired Bargman in 1994 and SurePull in 1995.

Tekonsha Engineering was independent until it was purchased by Echlin in 1976.
