Dealers continued ordering motorhomes and towable RVs at robust rates in December in anticipation of healthy retail demand during the winter show season, according to data gathered by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
The largest December increases, all over 20% compared with December 2001, were for travel trailers, fifth-wheels and Class C motorhomes, the RVIA reported.
The December gains in those categories contributed to total shipment increases of more than 20% for both motorhomes and towables for all of 2002 compared with the industry recession year of 2001, the RVIA also reported.
Here are the December and full-year 2002 shipment figures for each product category:
• Travel-trailer shipments increased 32.2% in December to 7,800 units, compared with 5,900 units delivered to dealers in December 2001. For all 2002, travel-trailer deliveries increased 26.9% to 129,700 units, compared with 102,200 units shipped in 2001.
• Fifth-wheel shipments increased 28.6% in December to 4,500 units, compared with 3,500 units delivered a year earlier. For all of 2002, fifth-wheel shipments increased 20.8% to 66,100 units, compared with 54,700 units in 2001.
• Folding camper shipments increased 4% in December to 2,600 units, compared with 2,500 units a year earlier. For all of 2002, folding camper shipments increased 9.8% to to 44,800 units, compared with 40,800 units in 2001.
• Truck camper deliveries were flat at 600 units in December, the same number that was delivered to dealers a year earlier. For all of 2002, truck camper shipments increased 1% to 10,000 units, compared with 9,900 units shipped in 2001.
• Class A motorhome shipments increased 6.9% in December to 3,100 units, compared with 2,900 units delivered a year earlier. During the full year 2002, Class A deliveries increased 18.6% to 39,600 units, compared with 33,400 units shipped in 2001.
• Class B motorhome deliveries were flat at 200 units in December, the same number that was delivered to dealers a year earlier. For all of 2002, Class B deliveries increased 7.7% to 2,800 units, compared with 2,600 units in 2001.
• Class C motorhome deliveries increased 22.2% in December to 1,100 units, compared with 900 units a year earlier. In 2002, Class C shipments increased 36.4% to 18,000 units, compared with 13,200 in 2001.
