Decorator Industries Inc. has acquired Fleetwood Enterprises Inc.’s drapery operation in Douglas, Ga., and the two companies have entered into a long-term supply agreement, they announced today (Jan. 23).
Fleetwood sold its drapery business so it could create more room to build RVs, and Decorator, based in Pembroke Pines, Fla., will open a new factory in the western U.S. to supply Fleetwood and other RV and manufactured home builders in that region.
The amount Decorator paid for Fleetwood’s drapery business was not disclosed.
Fleetwood got into the drapery business in 1996 to serve its own needs. It did not have any customers outside of Fleetwood, said Larry Mace, Fleetwood’s senior vice president of Supply and Materials.
Fleetwood, a major producer of RVs and manufactured homes, has no plans to change the operating status of its other vertically integrated supply subsidiaries, officials with the Riverside, Calif. firm stated.
Fleetwood opened the drapery supply operation because it felt it could design and fabricate its own decor packages more efficiently than by purchasing them from outside suppliers, Mace said. But he added, “Today’s manufacturing environment, combined with the necessity to increase our manufacturing capacity for the added volume of the RV business, would dictate a substantial capital investment to automate the manufacturing facility to be more efficient and increase productivity. Because of Decorator’s quality products and continued investment in this business, we have developed a long-term partnership agreement with this company to supply all of our drapery and other decor-related requirements for the next several years.”
Most of the products that Decorator will produce for Fleetwood will be fabricated at existing Decorator plants, company Chairman William Bassett said.
Decorator will build a new plant in the West to supply Fleetwood and to “provide a platform to significantly expand our business with other original equipment manufacturers of RVs and manufactured homes,” Bassett said.
“We believe this acquisition and geographic expansion will prove to be important milestones in the growth and success of Decorator Industries and will facilitate our objective to become the ‘supplier of choice’ in each of the markets we serve,” he added.
In addition to draperies, Decorator supplies curtains, shades, blinds, valance boards, bedspreads, comforters, pillows, cushions and trailer tents. Besides serving the RV and manufacturing housing industries, Decorator is a growing supplier to the hospitality market.
