Elkhart, Ind.-based Dometic Corp. today (Oct. 5) signed an agreement to purchase Polar Bay Industries LLC, Riviera Beach, Fla., a manufacturer of “unique air-conditioning systems for the marine pleasure boat industry.”
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
“They’re physically located just north of our current Pompano Beach facility,” Dometic President John Waters reported. “We’re planning to integrate the Polar Bay facility and the Pompano Beach facilities, which are located within easy driving distance of each other, within the next three to six months.
“They (Polar Bay) have a group of really talented and dedicated employees who will become part of our organization.
“Dometic plans to work closely with Polar Bay’s existing customer base to ensure a smooth transition. This acquisition further strengthens our position in the marine pleasure boat industry.”
Polar Bay’s air conditioners are unique, Waters said, because of their compact size and the fact that they are built in either self-contained or split-system formats, the latter of which involves placing the condensor and evaporator coils in different locations.
Polar Bay markets its products, tailored for pleasure craft shorter than 36 feet in length, to both OEMs and dealers for conversions.
Prior to this acquisition, Dometic’s presence in the marine market included Sealand sanitation systems and Dometic Environmental, a manufacturer of Tundra marine compressor refrigerators and MarineAir and CruisAir marine air conditioning located in Pompano Beach, Fla., and Richmond, Va.
