Supplier firm Dura Automotive Systems Inc. will close a manufacturing plant in Elkhart, Ind., early next year due to “generally sagging RV market demand,” the company announced today (Nov. 8).
Dura, based in Rochester Hills, Mich., is the parent of RV industry supplier firms Atwood Mobile Products and Excel. The manufacturing plant to be closed is connected to the former Excel Industries Inc. headquarters in Elkhart at 1120 N. Main St.
Dura bought Excel during January 1999.
Although manufacturing will cease at the Main Street location, sales, engineering and field service personnel and a small warehousing group will continue working at the facility.
A total of 300 people work at the Main Street location and about 200 will lose their jobs as a result of the factory closure, said Bob Pickering, president of Atwood Mobile Products.
Production workers at the Main Street facility make driver entrance doors and window systems for bus-profile Class A motorhomes and for the HUMMER sport utility vehicle, Pickering said.
Dura planned to move more RV door and window production into the Main Street factory but the industry’s cyclical downturn forced the cancellation of those plans, Pickering said.
The transfer of production will begin during December and should be completed before March 31, according to Dura.
