Indiana’s Elkhart County is a manufacturing juggernaut, not only compared to other counties in the state, but to counties across the nation.
The Elkhart Truth reported that according to manufacturing data released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau, Elkhart County’s manufacturing sector employed more people, 53,705, than any other county in the state. More, even, than the most populated counties, including Marion (42,808), Allen (24,975) and Lake (23,122) counties.
Nationally, Elkhart County ranks 21st among 2,903 U.S. counties in the number of manufacturing workers employed. Granted, the 53,705 total of manufacturing sector workers here trails the 359,532 in Los Angeles County, Calif., which sits atop the list. Nonetheless, Elkhart County ranks higher than many much more densely populated areas.
