Sales in Great Britain and Europe of the “Smart Fortow,” a unique niche trailer designed to carry only the Mercedes Benz rear-engine two-passenger Smart Car, are averaging more than 200 a year, reports Alan Pierce, director of Bantam Trailers Ltd., Aylesbury, Bucks, England. According to Pierce, who originally designed the 12-foot steel alloy Smart Fortow to haul his own Smart Car, DaimlerChrysler AG is considering designating the trailer, which weighs 500 pounds, as an official Smart Car accessory. “It is ‘forward loading’ which is unique for a rear-engine car,” Pierce said. “Also, its center of gravity is constant with or without a vehicle loaded on it.” Currently available in North America only in Canada, the Smart Fortow should be available in the U.S. sometime in the future through California-based ZAP Inc., which earlier this month debuted a Smart Car modified for the American market.
