February shipments of travel trailers were up sharply and wholesale deliveries of Class A and Class C motorhomes were moderately higher, but shipments of all other RV product categories were down in February, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
Travel-trailer shipments from factories to dealers were up 24.1% in February to 10,800 units, compared with 8,700 units delivered in February 2002, the RVIA reports.
And after the first two months of this year, travel-trailer deliveries were up 33.9% to 22,500 units, compared with 16,800 units shipped in the first two months of last year.
Meanwhile, Class A motorhome shipments increased 7.1% in February to 3,000 units, compared with 2,800 units delivered a year earlier. After the first two months of 2003, Class A shipments were up 7% to 6,100 units, compared with 5,700 units delivered in the same portion of 2002.
February deliveries of Class C’s were up 8.3% to 1,300 units, compared with 1,200 units delivered a year earlier. After the first two months of this year, Class C shipments also were up 8.3% to 2,600 units, compared with 2,400 units delivered during the first two months of 2002.
However, the declines in shipments of all other product categories might be the first sign of the decision by certain manufacturers to reduce their output because of concerns about the impact on the retail market of war with Iraq.
This may be true particularly in the case of fifth-wheels, which declined 12% in February to 4,400 units shipped, compared with 5,000 units delivered to dealers in February 2002.
After the first two months of this year, fifth-wheel shipments were down 2.1% to 9,400 units, compared with 9,600 units delivered in the same portion of 2002.
Here is how the other product categories fared:
• Folding camper shipments declined 27.8% in February to 2,600 units. After the first two months of this year, folding camper deliveries were down 17.1% to 5,800 units.
• Truck camper shipments declined 12.5% in February to 700 units. After the first two months of this year, truck camper deliveries were down 12.5% to 1,400 units.
• Class B motorhome shipments totaled 200 units in February, the same number that was delivered to dealers in February 2002. After the first two months of this year, Class B shipments were down 20% to 400 units.
