Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. will unveil a “smart” motorhome during the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) summer convention that begins Tuesday (Aug. 14) in Redmond, Ore.

The “pre-production” motorhome includes a personal computer and a portable Intel Web Tablet that allows the owners to open or close slideouts, change thermostat settings, adjust lighting and turn air conditioning and heating systems on or off.

Because the system is portable, slideouts and appliances can be adjusted from inside or outside of the RV.

Fleetwood’s supplier is Echelon Corp., which developed the LonWorks computer operating system that powers the “Mobile RV Information System.”

Other components of the system include the Web Tablet by computer chipmaker Intel and a personal computer powered by an Intel Pentium 4 chip.

“We were able to create a completely self-contained system that can be scaled up or down and have new types of devices easily added to it to meet the specific needs of a customer,” said Tom Jones, Fleetwood’s project manager.
