Diversified manufacturer Forest River Inc. acquired Elkhart, Ind.-based Glaval Bus Inc., effective Monday (April 1), the Goshen, Ind.-based Forest River announced.
The terms of the transaction were not revealed.
Towable RVs and motorhomes are among the products built by Forest River, which has factories in Indiana, California, Georgia and Oregon.
Glaval Bus is a 90-employee firm that builds mid-sized buses ranging from 21- to 34-feet long for up to 41 passengers.
“This acquisition is another piece of our focus for the last six months to increase our manufacturing capabilities and offerings to meet increased demand for Forest River products,” said Pete Liegl, president. “With the Glaval Bus acquisition, Forest River is developing as a major contributor in the mass transit industry.”
The closely held company began an expansion program last September when it acquired the Starcraft Bus and Mobility Van operations in Goshen, Liegl said. Since then, Forest River has built or bought over 1.5 million square feet of manufacturing space in Elkhart, Middlebury, Millersburg and Topeka, Ind., and Dallas, Ore.
Forest River also is seeking incentives from Goshen city officials to offset a portion of the cost of building a new, 100,000-square-foot factory in that community. However, as of last week, Liegl had not decided whether to build RVs in the new facility, according to a Forest River spokesman.
Forest River was the No. 3 producer in the combined travel trailer/fifth-wheel category last year. It also was No. 3 in terms of retail market share in folding campers last year, according to Statistical Surveys Inc.
In the combined Class A/Class C motorhome category, Forest River ranked No. 14 last year, according to Statistical Surveys, an independent market research firm.
Among Forest River’s new products are the Tsunami diesel pusher motorhome, but Liegl said it also has introduced a variety of non-RV products including: hydraulic powered dump trailers for the construction and landscaping industries; a trailer designed for the contractor and/or outdoor enthusiast allowing for the transport of tools and toys along with self-contained living quarters; commercial truck bodies on medium and heavy duty chassis and a new enclosed cargo trailer series.
