Forest River Inc., a manufacturer of towable RVs and motorhomes, has purchased the assets of Bristol, Ind.-based U.S. Cargo, according to Pete Liegl, president and CEO.
Terms of the transaction were not revealed.
“The addition of U.S. Cargo to our current product line of cargo and auto hauler trailers helps to position us in the leadership role in those markets,” Liegl said.
U.S. Cargo makes a full line of enclosed trailers and open deck landscape, auto and utility trailers.
Forest River’s cargo and auto hauler trailers are sold under the Cargo Mate, Continental Cargo and We-Haul brand names.
As part of the deal, Forest River also acquired U.S. Cargo’s powder coating system “that will further enhance Forest River’s capabilities,” according to the company.
Liegl believes Forest River now is the largest closely held manufacturer in the RV industry. During the first seven months of this year, Forest River ranked No. 3, in terms of retail market share, among the builders of towable RVs. It was only 122 units behind the No. 2 producer, Thor Industries Inc., according to market research firm Statistical Surveys Inc.
In motorhomes, Forest River ranked 14th after the first seven months of this year, Statistical Surveys reported.
