Middlebury, Ind.-based Grand Design RV Co., makers of the Momentum and Solitude fifth-wheels and Reflection fifth-wheel and travel trailers, will be introducing an ultra-lightweight, mid-priced travel trailer later this year that will take the company into a whole new towable category.
President and CEO Don Clark, who co-owns the two-year-old company with partners Ron and Bill Fenech, told RVBUSINESS.com the builder is adding a fourth production line to one of its existing manufacturing plants in June that will be dedicated to the yet-to-be-named travel trailer.
The travel trailer market is about three times the size of the fifth-wheel market, which is where Grand Design has mostly staked its claim, and Clark said the new travel trailer will be “a tremendous help for our entry into the travel trailer business.”
“We’re going to break into that market in what we feel is a pretty committed way,” he said.
It’s early in the product’s developmental stage, but Clark disclosed the laminated travel trailer will have a fiberglass exterior and aluminum framing.
“In classic Grand Design style, it will have the eye appeal of a much more luxurious, higher-end product than what the price point will actually be,” he said, adding the cost will be “extremely affordable.”
Clark expects a prototype will be available to the public prior to the RV Open House in September, and the production line will be ready in advance of the June launch.
“We’re pretty excited about it. Our dealers are extremely excited about it,” he said. “They’ve been asking for that type of product for a while. We encourage our dealers to help advise us as we continue to make entries into different segments of the marketplace.”
