The owners of RV manufacturer Grand Design RV Co. never could have imagined how fast their company would grow.
The South Bend Tribune reported that the soon to be two-year-old company recently announced a $6.9 million expansion on 48.8 acres just south of its current 67-acre campus in Middlebury, Ind.. Over the next few years, the company expects to add 330 jobs, putting it at nearly 800.
Success was expected, Don Clark said in a recent interview. Otherwise, he and Ron and Bill Fenech wouldn’t have taken the leap of starting the business in January 2013.
“Did we think it was going to happen this quickly?” he said of the company’s rapid growth. “No. None of us thought it would happen as fast as it has.”
There was, of course, a potentially unpredictable economy to navigate back then, and this was a startup in an industry coming out of a deep recession. But with each of the three men having 30-plus years of experience, good relationships with dealers and a strong focus on products, they all believed they had a good shot at success.
“We thought we could develop something that would sell on the marketplace,” Clark said.
