Gulf Stream Coach Inc. has completed a 35,000-square-foot expansion of its towables plant in Nappanee, Ind., and eventually will increase production there of its Conquest, Innsbruck, Amerilite and Kingsport travel trailers and fifth-wheels by 40%.
During the ramp-up phase for the expanded facility, which should conclude in late April, Gulf Stream anticipates increasing output of the four brands by 20%.
The effort to expand the company’s Plant 51 began in November and the facility now includes 125,000 square feet under roof.
The goal of the expansion is to reduce lead times for the towable products to three to four weeks.
“By doing this, we are able to improve dealer inventory turns from 2 1/2 to over six turns per year,” said John Stringer, national sales manager for Plant 51 towables.
“Most of the newly acquired space will be used to increase the capacity of the final-finish departments and the slide-room departments,” Stringer said. It also includes a paint booth and rain booth.
Gulf Stream ranked No. 9 in terms of retail market share in travel trailers and fifth-wheels with a 2.2% market share in 2003, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., an independent market research firm.
