The Board of Directors of the RV/MH Heritage Foundation Inc. has reached an agreement to buy 40 acres near Elkhart, Ind., for construction of a new RV/MH Hall of Fame facility.
The new location would be along I-80/90 (also known as the Indiana Toll Road) near the Elkhart East exit. It is highly visible to motorists traveling cross-country, which makes it better than the current hall of fame location near downtown Elkhart, several miles from the interstate.
The property is located southeast of the Elkhart East exit and the acquisition of the property is expected to be finalized by Sept. 15, said Al Hesselbart, vice president of the foundation.
The foundation needs a new building because the museum/library/fall of fame has outgrown the 10-year-old structure it now occupies, Hesselbart said.
A $6 million fund drive, chaired by Bruce Hertzke, chairman of Winnebago Industries Inc., Forest City, Iowa, has been quietly underway to support construction of the proposed 60,000-square-foot facility in which a hall of fame, library, museum and 10,000-square-foot conference center are to be housed.
The foundation currently has commitments for $3.7 million “and additional large gifts are in the works,” Hesselbart said.
