After officials denied a request for funding to improve a gravel county road, the Elkhart County Highway Department has taken on the project.
The Elkhart Truth reported that Executive Parkway, the road where the RV/MH Hall of Fame is located, is paved between C.R. 17 and the Hall of Fame. The stretch from the Hall of Fame east to C.R. 19, however, is gravel.
That unpaved section can be difficult for large motorhomes and other vehicles to travel, especially if it has been raining and the road is wet, said Laura Coyne, Elkhart County redevelopment director. Coyne said drivers using GPS to find their way to the hall are directed to enter from C.R. 19 — a problem Hall of Fame President Darryl Searer tried unsuccessfully to address with GPS companies.
At its June 4 meeting, the Elkhart County Redevelopment Commission tabled a request from Searer for $50,000 from the Northeast Corridor TIF district to resurface the eastern portion of Executive Parkway.
Later in the month, the highway department took on the project, cutting back overgrown brush along the road and filling in some large holes with new gravel, Elkhart County plan director Chris Godlewski said at the commission’s July 2 meeting. Ominous yellow signs warning motorists to travel the road at their own risk will be removed soon.
The county plans to put new gravel on the entire stretch of unpaved road before the RV Open House Sept. 22 to 24, Godlewski said.
