Horizon Transport Inc., Wakarusa, Ind., is purchasing land in Sturgis, Mich., to build a transfer facility near the Indiana Toll Road.
According to a report in the Sturgis Journal, the township board unanimously approved the rezoning of 16.8 acres from agricultural to industrial. Most properties surrounding the acreage are already zoned for industrial use.
Closing on the property is expected to occur next week and Horizon anticipates completion of construction by the end of August.
Last week, Marion Schrock of Horizon Transport told the planning commission it was urgent that his company find property for a transfer yard near the Indiana Toll Road interchange. Horizon partners with Goshen, Ind.-based Keystone RV Co., which is opening a new RV production branch in nearby Howe, Ind.
Horizon expects to seek more drivers to transport the Keystone units after phase one of their facility is built.
