Sen. Blake Doriot, a Republican from New Paris, Ind., who was elected to his first term last November, will be trying to get a recreational vehicle sales tax bill passed.

As reported by the Elkhart Truth, the bill would prevent out-of-state RV buyers from having to pay Indiana sales tax and their home state’s sales tax, essentially double taxation. Some states have legislation preventing consumers from being double taxed, but Indiana does not.

“This can add $5,000 to $9,000 to their purchase,” said Doriot. “Dealers have been telling me that sales to Florida and California buyers have dropped because of the issue. Buyers are just going elsewhere.”

Former state Sen. Carlin Yoder, who did not seek re-election to the post held by Doriot, unsuccessfully pushed a similar piece of legislation during the 2016 session.
