Billings, Mont.-based Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) has purchased a 208-site, upscale campground in South Padre Island, Texas, representing the eighth facility added to the KOA system in 2006.
According to a press release, the South Padre Island KOA, formerly known as the Destination RV Resort, is on more than 14 acres just ¼-mile south of Padre Island’s Queen Isabella Causeway.
The campground has 208 full-service sites that offer up to 50-amp service along with one- and two-bedroom condo units with views of the water. Other amenities include a 25-meter heated pool, laundry, restaurant, exercise room, boat launch and lighted fishing pier. There are also on-site charter deep-sea and bay fishing tours.
“The South Padre Island KOA is a very unique property in a great location,” said Scott Corey, KOA’s new vice president of Company Operated Properties. “It fits well into our system, and will offer our campers one of the best camping experiences available in North America.”
In addition to South Padre Island, other campgrounds added to the system during the past year include the Laughlin/Avi Casino, Nev., KOA; Branson, Mo., KOA; Trinity Lake, Calif., KOA; Dallas Metro, Texas, KOA; Grand Junction, Colo., KOA; Fort Collins/Lakeside, Colo., KOA; and the Ashland, W. Va., KOA.
Cory said two of KOA’s campground management veterans, Tom and Stacie Brooks, will be in charge at the South Padre KOA. They had previously managed KOA properties in Santa Cruz, Calif., Fiesta Key, Fla., and Bar Harbor, Maine.
“It was a pleasure working with KOA on this transaction,” said Stan McElroy, the previous owner of the South Padre park. “I’m confident that with the strong KOA brand and their high level of professionalism and dedication to customer service, they will continue to move this campground in the right direction.”
“This is just the start of a very aggressive growth spurt for KOA,” noted KOA President Shane Ott.
KOA currently has nearly 450 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
