Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) continued with its aggressive expansion plan, announcing the purchase of its second campground in Texas over a nine-day period.
According to a press release, Billings, Mont.-based KOA completed the purchase of the Houston North/Lake Conroe KOA on Dec. 20. The facility, formerly know as the Havens Landing RV Resort, is located 40 miles northwest of Houston near the town of Montgomery, Texas.
On Dec. 20, KOA announced it had purchased the 208-site Destination RV Park at South Padre Island, Texas, and renamed the campground the South Padre Island KOA.
KOA President and COO Shane Ott said KOA’s recent growth spurt is no coincidence.
“KOA has doubled the size of our company-owned properties in the last five years,” he said. “We are looking to acquire additional properties in key markets as well as convert existing independent campgrounds into our system as new franchises.”
KOA now has 25 company-owned campgrounds, as well as 415 franchised KOA parks in the U.S. and Canada. The Houston campground was the ninth added to the KOA system in 2006. There are also two other KOA campgrounds in the Houston area.
Scott Cory, KOA’s vice president of Company Operated Properties, said the Houston North/Lake Conroe campground is a great addition to KOA.
“It has everything it needs to be a great location for groups and families alike,” he said. “The 26,000 square-foot convention center makes it the ideal park for large group and family gathers. The campground is also just a mile from great water recreation opportunities at Lake Conroe.”
The campground has 240 full-service sites and 35 one- and two-room cabins with views of a stocked fishing pond. The park also offers a heated pool, spa and infant pool, barbecue pavilions, hospitality rooms, gazebos over the water as well as basketball, volleyball and bocce ball courts. The ballroom at the new KOA is large enough to host concerts and dances.
Former owner Joe Haven said he’s pleased to have his family’s campground join the KOA system.
“We’ve poured our hearts into this park over the years,” said Haven. “It’s comforting to know that it’s now part of a company like KOA that respects our legacy and will continue our work to develop this resort into a fantastic family destination.”
