Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) plans to give away about 70,000 campsites and cabins on May 12 during its third annual “Come Camp with Us Day” program.
“The ‘Come Camp With Us Day’ is quickly becoming a recognized event as more than 15,000 families showed up in 2005 to help us kick-start the camping season,” said KOA President and CEO Jim Rogers. “We are very excited to do it again, and love offering new campers a chance to try out the KOA camping lifestyle. It also allows us a chance to say thank you and show our appreciation to our existing customers by offering this free day.”
Mike Gast, KOA’s communications director, said the event has succeeded in launching the camping season in recent years because about 90% of the campers who take advantage of the free night also book a second night and make a weekend out of it.
“Some campgrounds designate certain sites (for the free promotion), but most of them give us the whole campground,” Gast said, adding that about 360 of KOA’s roughly 470 parks are participating in the event.
“Come Camp With Us Day” also serves as a fund-raising event for KOA Care Camps for children with cancer. Last year, more than $50,000 was raised from the free camping promotion to help support 34 camps across the U.S. that give children with cancer a chance to experience a genuine summer camping experience while continuing their medical treatments.
