Despite cold and rainy conditions in the Northwest and Central Plains, coupled with severe weather in Texas and Oklahoma, Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) locations saw more campers this Memorial Day weekend than in 2014.

The company reported in a press release that total Memorial Day weekend camper nights at the 485 KOA campgrounds in North America were up nearly 6% over last year’s totals. A camper night is measured as an occupied campsite, similar to a room night in the hotel industry.

The increased 2015 Memorial Day weekend numbers continue a strong trend for KOA campgrounds. Overall short-term camping nights are running more than 11% higher so far this year than at the same point in 2014.

Also, camper night numbers for the May 8-9 KOA Care Camps Big Weekend event were about 2% over last year, and advanced reservations for the June 19-21 Father’s Day weekend are nearly 24% over the numbers from this time last year. The 2015 Fourth of July holiday camper advanced reservations are also running about 10 percent over 2014 figures.
