Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) is headed for the Las Vegas strip.
Effective Dec. 1, the Billings, Mont.-based campground chain will operate the Circusland RV Park in conjunction with the Circus Circus Hotel, Casino and Theme Park.
KOA has signed a 10-year lease on the Circus Circus property, which replaces the KOA that was previously operated at Silverton Hotel, Casino and RV Park off the strip for the past three years.
“We knew the end was near,” KOA President and CEO Jim Rogers said of the company’s franchise agreement with Silverton. He added that the park operator recently notified KOA of a change in business strategy that involves an intensifying focus on its plans to develop a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World mega store on the Silverton property.
Silverton will continue to operate a campground, Rogers reported, but not with the level of commitment required to maintain a KOA franchise.
On the other hand, Rogers said, KOA’s agreement with Circus Circus will help it dominate the family niche. “They’ve got this incredible indoor theme park,“ he said. “Their facilities and what they offer for the kids is just fantastic. The two of us together can only continue to further and enhance that positioning.”
“This is a natural fit for both of us,” added Circus Circus Las Vegas Vice President and General Manager Don Thrasher. “Circus Circus has been entertaining family travelers for 35 years, while KOA has been the top family campground for 40 years.”
The Circus Circus Hotel and Casino includes 3,773 rooms, three full-size casinos covering 101,000 square feet as well as the world’s largest indoor theme park.
The new Las Vegas KOA at Circus Circus has 400 full-hookup sites, a swimming pool, a large convenience store, video arcade, playground, pool tables and a large meeting room for group functions and rallies.
Rogers said KOA plans to upgrade the Circus Circus campground and some of its related amenities. “We’re going to do some resurfacing,” he said. “We’re going to do some upgrades to the sites and the stores, and we’re going to look at the facilities they’ve got and see if we can improve some of the meeting rooms that are right there.”
