Barbara Leonard, editorial director for Trailer Life and MotorHome magazines, is retiring after 25 years with TL Enterprises Inc., an affiliate of Affinity Group Inc. (AGI), Ventura, Calif.
“I suspect many would agree that it is difficult to envision the magazines without Barbara, who began her career as associate editor of Trailer Life and MotorHome, and later became managing editor of both titles. She became the creative force behind the travel and feature material for both magazines while managing the editorial production process and the editorial staff,” says Bill Estes, who recently announced his own retirement as group publisher of RV publications for AGI.
Leonard, who spent 21 years as editorial director, also supervised several other TL publications, including the Trailer Life and Woodall’s RV Buyers Guides, the TL/MH e-newsletter and numerous special magazine sections.
“Barbara’s talent has always been the creative process – every new issue a canvas waiting for paint, a new opportunity to touch the reader,” noted Estes. “She has the intuition of a great editor – that of knowing and anticipating what the reader wants combined with an exceptional ability to create diverse combinations of travel and feature article topics that satisfy those interests, and the ability to find talented freelance authors and photographers across North America to fulfill the vision.”
During her tenure, both publications experienced continued growth and sustained “unusually high subscription renewal rates,” according to Estes.
Leonard, whose last day is May 12, plans to travel and stay involved in the travel industry and to work with TL and MH editors on specific projects in a consulting capacity.
