What used to be farmland full of vineyards in Coachella, Calif., now is a luxury motor-coach country club, not surprisingly named The Vineyards, The Desert Sun of Palm Springs, Calif., reports.
The development, created and owned by Rancho Heights LLC on north Dillon Road, recently celebrated its grand opening and is the first of its kind in Coachella, a community southeast of Palm Springs.
It includes a nine-hole regulation golf course that is open to the public on a limited basis, The Desert Sun reports.
“It established our first golf course in the city: That by itself is unique,” said Gabriel Papp, director of community development with the city of Coachella.
City officials are pleased with the upscale project, one of many under construction in the burgeoning city.
“We’re growing tremendously. It’s almost unbelievable,” said Coachella Mayor Richard Macknicki.
Coachella’s population is 26,772. City projections put the population at about 28,700 after the new year and it could further swell to around 40,100 by 2008.
Coachella has become a hotbed for construction with its availability of land. The city is investigating ways to balance the increase of residents and provide services for them.
“We welcome a development like that (the Vineyards). We’re very happy it’s in Coachella and people are seeing what’s available in the city,” Macknicki said.
The new development would appeal to part-time winter residents who either want a home base for their motorhome or want to move their motorhome permanently.
Each motorcoach site comes with a casita that ranges in size from 530 square feet to 1,095 square feet.
Each site has a garage, full bathroom and laundry room, and can include a full kitchen, living area, fireplace, entertainment center and office/den area.
Prices range from about $179,000 to $319,000.
Bob Marshall, golf director and sales associate, said a unique aspect of the project is that residents own the land and the golf course – unlike other motorcoach facilities that just lease the motorcoach sites.
“There are a lot of RV parks and centers, but ours are strictly for sale. They own the land itself – the building,” Marshall said.
There is also a Mediterranean-style clubhouse, indoor spa and sauna, an exercise room, outdoor lap pool and tennis courts. Not yet built, but included in the last phase of the project, is a 10,000-square-foot library, ballroom and activities room.
The project will have 460 sites when finished. Marshall said the first phase of construction, which includes 69 units, should be complete by April 1.
There are three model homes people can peruse.
“It’s becoming more and more popular with retirees and those that have the big coach motorhomes. It kind of provides more or less a home-base approach,” Macknicki said of the project.
