More than 400 people were treated to a “campground-style” lunch while touring through 10 RVs on display as part of the “RVs & Campsites at the Capitol” program hosted May 17 by the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) in Lansing, Mich.
“Many legislators, including senators and representatives, staff members from the Secretary of State’s office and the Department of Natural Resources, leadership from both parties and other state agencies, took time out of their busy schedules to visit the MARVAC tent and tour the RV display,” said MARVAC Director Bill Sheffer.
The event, held on the Capitol lawn, coincided with Gov. Jennifer Granholm declaring the week of May 14 as “Recreation Vehicle and Campground Week in Michigan.”
MARVAC said the governor’s proclamation brought attention to the contributions the RV and camping industries make toward Michigan’s economy and tourism.
According to MARVAC, Michigan RV sales in 2005 totaled 13,973 units and the state ranked fourth in the number of RV shipments with over 15,000 units delivered to Michigan RV dealers.
MARVAC also said there are over 200,000 registered RVs in Michigan, which offers 1,200 licensed campgrounds and more than 80,000 campsites.
