The Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC) announced it will be hosting a “Dealer Legal Symposium” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 21 at the association’s offices in Okemos, Mich.

According to a press release, lawyers from Farmington, Mich.-based Dolenga & Dolenga PLLC, who specialize in defending RV dealerships and manufacturers and assisting with litigation prevention, will offer a presentation on various topics critical to customer relations and risk management, and how to prevent and defend litigation.

“They will focus on helping you prevent costly lawsuits about sales practices, service issues, and product defects,” the announcement stated. “They will discuss how best to deal with difficult customers and how you can have appropriate paperwork and procedures in place to prevent lawsuits from being filed against you. They will also address regulatory and other claims that are brought against dealerships, including how best to respond to those, and how to make sure that your dealership does not have unnecessary exposure in those areas.”

The seminar will focus on key risk management and litigation prevention strategies that dealerships can use to better their customer relationships. The lawyers will provide an overview of the laws that are used to file lawsuits against dealerships and manufacturers, as well as some of the statutes that governmental entities utilize to audit and/or take action against dealerships’ licenses. This will cover items such as claims for breach of warranty, vehicle repurchases, consumer protection and deceptive trade practice actions, lemon laws, Federal Trade Commission regulations, and Consumer Financial Protection bureau actions.  

The lawyers also will discuss why dealerships and manufacturers get sued, utilizing specific examples of litigation that has occurred and why they have had good or bad outcomes. They will also provide tips on how attendees can make sure that their dealerships do not get sued and improve customer relations. This will include best practices for sales, finance and insurance and service paperwork, as well as procedures that can be followed in those departments. They will provide specific examples about why certain things should and should not be done, how to change irate customers into good customers, and how to help make sure lawyers do not file lawsuits against dealerships.

The session will end with an interactive question-and-answer period, which will allow participants to bring any questions/situations to the attention of experienced attorneys who are seasoned in dealing with RV customers and all of the above issues.
