Despite an 11% decline in attendance compared to last year, organizers of the 30th Annual Fall Detroit RV & Camper Show are reporting that this year’s event was a “good but not great success.” EDITOR’S NOTE: To view a slide show of the show, go to the RVBUSINESS.com Home Page and scroll down to the Industry Videos section.
Show Director Darren Ing of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC), which hosted the Oct. 2-6 event, said even with slightly fewer people — roughly 14,000 people — passing through the turnstiles at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Mich., it still represents excellent attendance and one of the best on record.
“Dealers like to play their cards close to the vest, but they were telling me they were either flat in terms of sales or they were up a little bit and did well,” Ing told RVBUSINESS.com. “So, overall, I’d have to say it was a healthy show.”
About 350 RVs were on display, including folding campers, motorhomes, travel trailers, toy haulers and fifth-wheels ranging in price from $6,995 to $750,000. Also, the event included exhibitors showcasing parts and accessories, campgrounds, on-site RV financing and RV rentals.
Ing said the show’s educational seminars also were a highlight, as each were well attended. He added that a large percentage of consumers who attended the seminars immediately visited the exhibitor’s booth to purchase product mentioned during the seminar.
Another highlight was the appearance of Curt Hemmeler, executive director of the RV Technical Institute (RVTI), who met with dealers prior to the show’s opening. Hemmeler explained what the RVTI is all about, and how its mission to recruit, train and certify RV service technicians will benefit participating dealers.
Similarly, Hemmeler announced the MARVAC will host an RVTI training seminar in December at its offices in Okemos, Mich. Ing said further information will be forthcoming on that seminar.
