Monaco Coach Corp. has been named as the Official Motorhome of The Great Race 2003, the annual cross-country vintage-car rally held June 21-July 4.
The Coburg, Ore.-based manufacturer will provide a motorhome for use as the mobile media center that will ride along with the racers on their course from Livonia, Mich., to Ormond Beach and Daytona Beach, Fla.
The event, in which enthusiasts of pre-1951 cars cruise through the heartland of America in their restored vehicles, has been covered by media outlets ranging from ABC to The History Channel.
“We have looked at several sports marketing platforms and The Great Race just rose to the top,” said Ed Kinney, vice president of Dealer Marketing for Monaco.
Local Monaco Coach dealers also will participate at each of the 14 nightly stops with model displays and walk-throughs for the Great Race spectators.
“Having our recreational vehicles on display and available for middle America to see firsthand at the Great Race lunch and overnight stops in locations such as Hot Springs, Ark., Savannah, Ga. and Daytona Beach, is perfect for us,” Kinney said.
For the uninitiated, the Great Race pits drivers against a course comprised primarily of backroads. Racers are judged by how close they come to the “perfect” drive times established by race organizers – a task made all the more challenging given the “vintage” nature of the racing vehicles.
