The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite posted a strong gain for the third consecutive trading session on Thursday, climbing 116 points, or 4.6%.

Investors bought tech stocks on the assumption that bad news has already been factored into stock prices.

But there also were bright spots, including business-to-business e-commerce software maker Ariba, which posted a quarterly profit well above market analysts’ estimates.

Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had a ho-hum day, gaining 5 points, or 0.05%, and RV company stocks were mixed.
