Long distance callers to the vast majority of RV manufacturers and suppliers in Northern Indiana will need to use new area codes later this year.
Elkhart County, which includes the cities of Elkhart and Goshen and the villages of Bristol, Middlebury, Nappanee, New Paris and Millersburg, will switch to the new 574 area code beginning June 14.
Additionally, LaGrange County, which includes the villages of Topeka, Shipshewana and LaGrange, will switch to the new 260 area code on June 14.
The Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. motorhome complex and its suppliers in Decatur, Ind., also will switch to area code 260.
Beginning Tuesday (Jan. 15), it will be possible to call long distance to reach businesses and individuals by dialing area codes 574 and 260. However, companies and businesses in the affected portions of Northern Indiana can continue being reached by dialing area code 219 until June 14.
But after June 13, it will be possible to reach businesses and individuals in the affected portions of Northern Indiana by only by using either the 574 or 260 area codes.
As was the case in more urbanized areas years ago, the addition of cell phones, fax machines and pagers exhausted all possible combinations of seven-digit phone numbers within the 219 area code, forcing the telecommunications industry to split the 219 area code region into three parts.
Only the northwestern portion of the Indiana will keep the 219 area code after June 14.
