Motorhome and fifth-wheel manufacturer Newmar Corp. reduced its work force at the company’s complex in Nappanee, Ind., for the third time this year, cutting 31 manufacturing positions.
The South Bend Tribune reported that layoffs were “due to the continuing economic downturn and the impact it has made on the RV industry,” according to Keith Weirich, director of human resources.
High gas prices and a slow economy have chipped away at Newmar’s original labor force of 905 workers at the beginning of the year to about 593 this month.
In February, Newmar eliminated 118 positions, or about 13% of the workforce. Another 163 workers were laid off last month. Newmar’s most recent reduction amounts to about 5% of the work force.
