At a recent dealer gathering, Newmar Corp. unveiled its new Northern Star diesel pusher, featuring an 89-inch interior height, according Dick Parks, president.
The base suggested retail price for the Northern Star is around $190,000, which places it in the same range as Newmar’s Dutch Star, the Nappanee, Ind.-based company’s most popular motorhome brand.
“We built a coach around a feature, rather than around a price,” Parks said. “Some people will want that interior height.
“We’ve raised the (interior) height of all our products at least 2 inches as we’ve gone through life-cycle changes,” Parks said.
An example is Newmar’s Essex, the company’s highline diesel pusher, which went through a life-cycle change for model-year 2004, and now has an 82-inch interior height. “But this (89-inch interior height Northern Star) is a dramatic increase,” Parks said.
The Northern Star comes on a Freightliner XC chassis with a 350-hp Caterpillar C7 engine that satisfies the EPA’s tougher 2004 emissions standards. The 39-foot, 5-inch coach comes in three triple-slide floorplans with three interior color and three full-body paint options.
The new brand was first shown during the Harrisburg, Pa., show in September and was formally unveiled to Newmar’s dealers in Nappanee Oct. 26-28. It will be at Newmar’s display at the Louisville Show in less than two weeks.
“Of course, other companies have come out with high-ceiling units, but we’ve got this feature to show off plus we’ll put the Newmar quality into it and we think it’ll be a winner,” Parks said. “We’re starting out with triple-side (floorplans) but I have to assume sooner or later we’d want to do a quad-slide since that’s fairly popular out in the marketplace.”
