The value of industrial and commercial buildings constructed in Goshen, Ind., and areas served by Elkhart County government has been steady for the past two years.
The Goshen News reported that according to building permit data from the Elkhart County Planning Department, 23 commercial/industrial permits for new construction were issued in 2013 and the projects had a value of $38 million. Twenty-two commercial/industrial building permits for new buildings issued in 2014 were for projects totaling $55.5 million.
While new RV plant sites, with their cranes lifting huge steel girders, are noticeable to passers-by, a significant portion of the commercial/industrial work going on in Elkhart County and Goshen are remodeling and addition projects. In Elkhart County in 2014 there were 67 such projects that had a value of $39.2 million. Additions and alteration projects classified in Goshen as non-residential/non-housekeeping numbered 68 and had a value of $22.8 million, according to city records.
With the recreational vehicle industry having a heavy presence in Goshen and the county, when it does well, home builders do well, according to Tim Miller, owner of Fireside Homes in Goshen.
“Our customers are RV or RV-related customers, and they are not shy about what they are building,” Miller said.
