Bruce Butler feels truly comfortable at one place in the world.

For the last 10 years, the Vietnam veteran and his wife, Jane, have traveled to Kokomo for the annual Healing Fields veterans reunion.

The Warsaw couple says that renting an RV from an Elkhart company allows them to take more time to relax and spend a weekend each year with others who understand struggles of veterans of the war.

Butler served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate from 1969 to 1973. Most of his time was spent aboard the USS Lyman K. Swenson, a destroyer.

The reunion, scheduled this year for Sept. 12 to 19, is held by the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Organization and provides a place for veterans to meet, reminisce and find peace, Jane said.

“We knew about the event in Kokomo for a good 20 years, but at that time of year something always came up,” Jane said.

Then, one year, the couple met another veteran. He had just returned from the event and encouraged the Butlers to make the trip the following year.

“He said that once you go you’ll never stop going,” Jane said. “Those words were true.”
