RV Retailer LLC announced today (Sept, 17) that it has added three stores with the acquisition of Sonny’s Camp-N-Travel, a towable and motorized RV dealer with retail outlets in Charlotte, N.C., and Spartanburg, S.C., plus the opening last week of a tenth ExploreUSA RV Supercenter at a 16-acre greenfield location in Tyler, Texas.
With these additional outlets, RV Retailer, launched in early 2018 in conjunction with capital partner Redwood Capital Investments, is now comprised of 24 stores in seven states also including Florida, Arizona, New York and Iowa.
“We are pleased to continue our expansion in the states of Texas and South Carolina while adding our first store in North Carolina,” said Jon Ferrando, president and CEO of RV Retailer, headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. “These are excellent markets and will be great stores for us. We are also pleased with the strong performance of our overall RV business, which is outpacing the RV industry year-to-date with strong momentum through the summer selling season.”
In a press release, RV Retailer described 35-year-old Sonny’s Camp-N-Travel as a leading RV dealer retailing a brand mix including Grand Design, Thor and Forest River products. And true to the formula RV Retailer has employed since the outset, Sonny’s, which retailed over a thousand units in 2018, will continue to operate under its original Sonny’s Camp-N-Travel brand name with existing general managers Justin Slusser and TJ Paulin continuing to oversee their respective stores.
“We are excited to have Justin Slusser, TJ Paulin and all of Sonny’s associates join the RV Retailer team,” said John Rizzo, EVP and CFO of RV Retailer, who, like Ferrando, is a former AutoNation executive. “We are excited about the growth prospects for Sonny’s business with this talented management team, excellent market locations and strong product mix.”
“Our team is excited to enter into the Tyler, Texas, market with our tenth ExploreUSA location” added Scott Chaney, CEO of ExploreUSA. “With a talented ExploreUSA team and strong brand mix led by Grand Design and Forest River Rockwood, we are well positioned to take advantage of growth opportunities in this market.”
Also acquired by RV Retailer since January of 2018 are RV One Superstores with eight dealerships on the East Coast and Iowa, Motor Home Specialist in Texas and Tom’s Camperland with three stores in Phoenix
Ferrando told RVBUSINESS.com that RV Retailer’s formula for retaining existing management teams while equity-partnering with existing owners has been working quite well. “The team is united in the vision to create a great RV retail company,” he said. “There’s tremendous mutual respect among our business leaders, and everybody is enthusiastic about what we’re doing and where we’re going.”
Morever, he added, the North American RV industry can expect more expansionist moves from RV Retailer, one of the industry’s more aggressive RV retail consolidators.
“Yes, we’re going to continue, and we’ve got a lot of irons in the fire, mostly in our core markets — Texas, Florida and also in the Carolinas and Arizona,” said Ferrando. “So, we have a lot of exciting things and opportunities that we’re looking at that I think you’ll see us execute on later this year and going into 2020. So, we remain bullish on the whole industry. We’ve got a lot of momentum in the business and we’re excited about all of the opportunities in front of us.”
